The resolution is x and displays 16 million colors, for those of you wondering. Both screens are simply amazing. The 5 megapixel auto-focus camera takes really sharp images indoors and out, and holds its own in moderate light settings.
The camera also has geotagging not on by default , anti-shake not on by default , and a plethora of other options and settings ready to be tweaked. We enjoyed using the camera, and unless you often take pictures in dark settings that require a flash, we think you're going to enjoy it as well. The video camera, much like the still camera, works really well.
You're not going to be disappointed. The video camera defaults to shooting in x , but we know you… you're going to crank that baby up to x for some p recording fun. Video playback is smooth, with no lags or jagged frames, and the camcorder seems to autofocus very effectively.
The audio quality during video recording is also surprisingly good. Audio is crisp, maybe a little high on the treble, but clear and totally acceptable for a smartphone video camera. The phone is pretty standard, no real frills or thrills here. We wish there was some sort of visual voicemail system built into the device, but if you have Google Voice if not we recommend signing up that can easily be taken care of thanks Android!
The speakerphone is loud and the sound is very accurate this goes for media playback as well. Sound from the earpiece is not quite as clear as that emanating from the DROID X or iPhone 4, but it isn't bad by any stretch of the imagination. Not much else to elaborate on here, moving along…. They also consume less power. The Captivate's touch screen was responsive and fast.
We were able to quickly swipe through the various home screens and menu pages, and the scrolling experience was smooth, as was the pinch-to-zoom gesture.
The display also has a six-axis accelerometer, which comes in handy for gaming, and it was fast to change the screen orientation whenever we rotated the phone.
Below the screen, are four touch-sensitive Android shortcuts: menu, home, back, and search. There's a 3. As usual, the camera is found on back, and just as a quick tip: if you want remove the battery door to swap out cells or access the SIM card or expansion slot, slide out the bottom portion of the phone first before removing the door.
For more add-ons, check our cell phone accessories, ringtones, and help page. The latter is definitely improved from previous versions, with some enhanced functionality and a more polished look.
Buddies Now is like a favorites list and lets you immediately call or text those contacts, as well as comment on any of their updates.
There are a number of other Samsung widgets, as well as Android widgets and other shortcuts, all of which can be added to one of seven home screens. The home screens can also be personalized with live wallpapers, but there are two elements that can't be changed: the pull-down notification tray on top, which now includes wireless manager and profile functions, and the toolbar along the bottom with quick-launch buttons to the phone app, e-mail, Web browser, and applications.
Pressing the latter takes you to a nice grid view of all your apps; they're spread out over several pages, which you can swipe from side to side to get to. We much prefer this layout over the standard Android one, where you have to scroll up and down. It feels more natural and easier to navigate. Admittedly, we missed some elements of HTC Sense, such as the Leap screen, which provides a thumbnail version of all your home screen panels, but for the general consumer, TouchWiz does a good job of making Android quite easy to use, almost to the point that it doesn't even look or feel like an Android phone.
The Captivate also has a six-axis sensor, built-in accelerometer, a gyroscope, and has pinch-to-zoom support. The Captivate has a slightly textured back and a slanted top and bottom, giving it a look that sets it apart from blander, more evenly rounded slabs.
That infuriates geeks who want control over their phones. In addition to having a 5-megapixel camera with HD video recording, the phone has 16GB of onboard storage expandable up to 32GB and 3D surround sound.
The Captivate will ship running Android 2. The main menu of applications is also spread out across several panels that you can swipe from side-to-side instead of vertically like current Android phones.
